What is a Physician Assistant?

At Huron River Psychiatry, our providers include highly skilled Physician Assistants dedicated to providing exceptional mental health care. Physician Assistants are licensed medical professionals trained to diagnose and treat illnesses, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They receive rigorous medical training and must pass a national certification exam, ensuring they meet high standards of medical knowledge and clinical practice.

Physician Assistants are also required to complete at least 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years to maintain their knowledge and skills. Additionally, they must recertify at a national level every ten years, ensuring they stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in medical care.

Physician Assistants are competent and proficient providers who work closely with patients to deliver personalized and compassionate care. In the field of psychiatry, they are well-versed in evaluating mental health conditions, developing treatment plans, and managing medications. They are an integral part of the healthcare team, bringing a patient-centered approach to mental health care that focuses on collaboration, education, and shared decision-making.

Physician Assistants work as part of a collaborative care team, following a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a licensed physician. This agreement ensures that while our Physician Assistants operate autonomously in delivering mental health care, they also have access to ongoing consultation and support from an experienced physician. This collaborative model enhances the quality of care by allowing PAs to leverage their own expertise alongside the knowledge and insights of a physician when necessary.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

At Huron River Psychiatry, some of our providers are highly trained Nurse Practitioners who specialize in mental health care. Nurse Practitioners are licensed advanced practice registered nurses who are educated to assess, diagnose, and treat medical and psychiatric conditions, develop and manage treatment plans, and prescribe medications. They complete graduate level nursing education and advanced clinical training that prepares them to serve as primary mental health providers for many patients.

Nurse Practitioners must complete rigorous board certification in their specialty area and maintain that certification through ongoing continuing education. They are required to stay current with evolving standards of care, emerging research, and best practices in order to provide safe and effective treatment over time.

In psychiatry, Nurse Practitioners are skilled in evaluating mental health conditions, discussing diagnosis and treatment options, and managing psychiatric medications. They work closely with patients and families to create individualized treatment plans that emphasize education, collaboration, and shared decision making.

Nurse Practitioners at Huron River Psychiatry practice as part of a collaborative medical team and maintain a formal practice agreement with a supervising physician. This structure allows them to provide independent, patient centered care while also having access to consultation and support from an experienced physician when needed. This collaborative approach helps ensure high quality, consistent psychiatric care for every patient we serve.
